The big hitters finally showed up again for the Philadelphia Phillies. Chase Utley and Ryan Howard hit 400-foot home runs only pitches apart in the third inning, both ending long homerless droughts, and the Phillies went on to an 8-6 victory over the Texas Rangers on a rainy Saturday night. “I’ve said it all along, we’ve got to hit to win,” manager Charlie Manuel said.

The Detroit Tigers had a long, hard road to .500 this season, and the culmination didn’t come easy Saturday night. Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run double in the bottom of the ninth and Detroit overcame Todd Jones’ blown save to beat the Colorado Rockies 7-6. With their fourth straight win and 14th in 17 games, the Tigers improved to .500 for the first time this season.

The maturation of Manny Parra is happening faster than expected. Parra allowed two hits in seven innings to win his sixth straight start and the Milwaukee Brewers beat Minnesota 5-1 on Saturday night to end the Twins‘ 10-game winning streak. Bill Hall had a two-run double and Ryan Braun and Corey Hart also had RBIs for the Brewers, who have won nine of 12.

Florida Marlins second baseman Dan Uggla left Saturday night’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks because of a left ankle sprain. Uggla tried to stretch a single into a double in the fourth, appearing to injure himself as he pulled up to go back to first base. He was tagged out hobbling in the baseline and limped back to the dugout.

Like a barn-storming squad from years ago, the Angels swept into town, beat up on the local nine then hopped the next train out of town after handing the Philadelphia Phillies a 3-2 defeat on Sunday.

Payoff pitch not coming from some big signees
Dontrelle Willis, who went to the Detroit Tigers with plenty of hype, was awarded a three-year, $29 million contract before throwing a pitch. He still has yet to win a game.
