Open Question: What are some good animes?
What are some good anime movies or series that are NOT things like; Inuyasha, Naruto, Bleach, Fruits Basket, Dragon Ball Z, Pokemon, etc. etc. etc. I am more a movie fan than a series fan, but I wouldn’t mind finding an interesting series either. I’m a huge Hayao Miyazaki and Ghibli fan. I love My Neighbor Totoro, Ponyo, Howl’s Moving Castle, Castle in the Sky, Grave of the Fireflies, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, I wasn’t really a big fan of Porco Rosso or Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Some others that I really liked were Pom Poko, The Cat Returns and the Girl Who Leaped Through Time and Paprika. I also liked Final Fantasy VII Advent Children (I like the Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts games by Square Enix). I have an infatuation with dreams and Time Travel, and I also like other fantasy aspects. I love the idea of almost like another world, like Spirited Away, and also like the deep connection with nature in Princess Monoke, My Neighbor Totoro, and Pom Poko. I like slight romance, like the cuteness in The Girl Who Leaped Through Time. I’m also an animal lover. I particularly like dogs. Does anyone have an suggestions for me? Or know of any other good anime films or series? Thank you!

Resolved Question: My Region 2 Laptop Playing Region 1 DVD’s?
Hiya Just wondering does anyone have any idea’s on how the following might be happening. Recently i bought Joey series 2 on dvd from amazon canada, they were the only place selling it that i could find, im in europe so here we have region 2, the joey dvd box set was in region 1 but i wasn’t going to let that stop me buying it as i have been looking for this for a long time, and i also knew there is software out there to overcome the region coding protection… So i had planned to purchase software or even try find free software to overcome this, i also knew that you can change the region on the laptops dvd drive 5 times max, as this would be the first time ever using region 1 in my laptop, 1 time change would be more than enough, the dvd drive is set to region 2 as i checked this before i got the dvd box set. So they arrived today and just out of curiosity i put one of the dvds in my laptop and to my great surprise, the dvd is working normally with windows media player, no error messages about been region 1 etc and also on the back of the box set it does have a small picture of the world with 1 on it, indicating region 1. Don’t get me wrong im not complaining at all, just thought its a little odd as to how this can happen. Any ideas? Thanks
Open Question: Frederick Copleston vs Bertrand Russell: What do you make of Copleston’s reasoning here?
I have already asked this question in the philosophy section, but I think that physics has some bearing on this matter, which is why I also ask it here. I recently read a debate between the British historian of philosophy Frederick Copleston (also a Jesuit) and the British philosopher Bertrand Russell. I have to say that, as a great admirer of Russell, I thought his responses to Copleston were not wholly satisfactory, particularly with respect to the following argument. For instance, when pressed by Copleston as to the cause of the world and the universe, Russell replied, I should say that the universe is just there, and that’s all. Russell’s brand of philosophy undoubtedly led him to take such a view, but I can’t be the only one who finds such a statement inadequate. You can read the debate online for yourselves, but I am here asking your opinion of one of Copleston’s arguments for the existence of God, which is essentially a recapitulation of Leibniz’s argument from Contingency or the First Cause argument. It is as follows: We know that there are at least some beings in the world which do not contain in themselves the reason for their existence. For example, I depend on my parents for my existence, and they depended upon my grandparents as the cause of their own existence and so on. We need not confine this chain simply to humans. Thus, the world is simply the totality or aggregate of individual objects, none of which contain in themselves alone the reason for their existence. There isn’t any world distinct from the objects which form it, any more than the human race is something apart from the members. Therefore, since objects exist, and since no object of experience contains within itself reason of its existence, it follows that the totality of objects must have a reason, that is to say a cause, external to itself. That reason must be an existent being, which is either itself the reason for its own existence or it is not. If it is, well and good. If it is not, then we must proceed farther. But if we proceed to infinity in that sense, then there’s no explanation of existence at all. So, I should say, in order to explain existence, we must come to a being which contains within itself the reason for its own existence, that is to say, which cannot not exist. Let me say here, that, as an atheist, whilst I might accept the possibility of a fundamental cause, I do not necessarily believe it to be a Supreme Being. So we can dissent from Copleston’s view of the nature of the cause, but we do not necessarily have to deny that there IS a cause to it all. So simply because he posits the fundamental cause to be a Supreme Being does not invalidate his reasoning that there is a cause. Russell retorts that he sees no ground whatever for the assumption that everything has or must have a cause. Indeed, he states that, for him, it is illegitimate to even raise the question of the cause of the world. And at any rate, he notes, physicists have already shown that individual quantum transitions in atoms have no cause. Copleston, however, thinks this is just a temporary inference. But in essence, I want to solicit the views of contributors on Copleston’s chief argument: that the series of events is either caused or it is not caused. If it is caused, there must obviously be a cause external to the series. If it is not caused, then it must be sufficient to itself. But if we reconsider the example of humans or anything else that has a phenomenal cause, then this can’t be so, since each human in the series is contingent (i.e. on his parents, etc.). Therefore, there must be a cause. Is Copleston’s philosophical reasoning defective in any way? Is it outdated, for instance, by developments in such disciplines as quantum mechanics? Thank you for taking the time to peruse this.
